A symphony of expressive and haunting melodies to honor the wandering lost souls of human beings is what makes a soulful requiem. It is used to describe sacred compositions that set music and religious texts to be appropriate at a funeral or to describe such compositions for liturgies other than the Roman Catholic Mass.
Requiem is one of the earliest surviving forms of chant or music. These days, such form of art is normally declined for use and is being practiced only in operas and few catholic churches. Due to the modernization of art including music, few surviving requiems have evolved. Perhaps, the most notable is the genre of war requiem which comprised of compositions dedicated to the memory of people killed in wartime. There is only a few that still practices to perform a requiem in performance art and music concerts.
In the age of contemporary art, it is hard to differentiate which piece of artwork could truly express and gradually narrate a story to the point of dragging one’s consciousness away from logical thinking, the way Requiem does when is being performed by the artists. For some, it is difficult to connect and understand the meaning of artwork when he/she is unable to interpret properly what each masterpiece tells the viewers.
The select artist will dare to display their own version of requiem, expressed through art, in a four-man exhibit. This will display the ability of each artist to connect and have a deep conversation to the audience using their distinct palettes, visual perception, and ambient brushstrokes.
Floating with the melancholic clouds of hopes and dreams, the artist Chiz Cueva paints his way out of his room using clouds as his main subject to represent his perception in life to just “go with the flow” and let everything happens. With his signature “The Card face”, Miller Laberinto uses his character to play musical instruments that he cannot play to narrate a story for each painting.
Through the use of his genuine art style, Nelson Ricahuerta boldly displays his interpretation of what unconditional love truly means and how does it matter to everyone.
Distinct palette and expressive use of colors to his figures representing the critical choices made by individuals in the present are subjects that isolate Alvin Paraguison from the rest.
While some expressions might not be able to escape the prison of insecurities, the artists’ unique style has its capability to communicate clearly their emotions and eventually immortalize what lingered in their subconscious minds. The symphony of individual allegories presented in this 4-man exhibit through the artists’ soulful works will outlive their Requiem of Souls through time.
