Brutalism from the term ‘Beton brut’ meaning “raw concrete” was first associated with architecture for its rough, unusual, and massive unfinished surfaces. Concrete and this movement have flourished for architects and the like because of its unpretentious honesty on exposing the material on its true form as well as being straight-forward to a structure’s function and services to human use.
Witness as Arvin Santos, Bayani Galera, Jay Condeno, Jayroll Francisco, Ritche Yee and Vincent Santos through this group exhibition entitled “Deconstructive Brutalism” try to deconstruct and reinterpret brutalist ideology in their works by showing the bare truth from their own perspectives and point of views. Unpretentious, straight-forward, imperfect yet giving a utopian interpretation through their material of choice to be Brutalists of their own age – though not concrete – but through their brushes, paints and canvases.
